Becoming Fitter at 40 than at 30
Strategies that have worked for me may also work for you.
Turning 40 is often seen as a milestone that comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to fitness. However, with the right approach, it’s entirely possible to be fitter at 40 than you were at 30. During the past decade, I’ve transitioned from eating meat to a plant-based diet; I’ve experienced periods of abstaining from alcohol and caffeine; and I’ve tried various gym routines, home workouts, and monthly gym memberships.
Here are some of the key strategies I employed that helped me become fitter at 40.
1. Embrace a holistic approach
In my early 30s, fitness was all about the gym. Over the past few years, I’ve adopted a holistic approach that balances a varied approach to physical activity with nutrition, mental health, and rest.
- Physical activity: I’ve incorporated a mix of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility workouts; for instance, thanks to Apple Fitness+, my current workout routine includes HIIT, kickboxing, core, and yoga alongside my existing running and strength workouts. This has not only helped in creating lean muscle and burning some fat, but it has also enhanced my overall mobility and reduced my injury risk.
